Conex recruits a customs anthropologist
Press Room January 2006

CONEX, European leader in customs declarations and clearance software, has created the position of “Customs Anthropologist" with the recruitment of Lance THOMPSON.

Lance THOMPSON joins CONEX with the mission of exploring the world. His goal: explore the customs methods and regulations around the world in order to develop adapted software.

CONEX, expert publisher of customs formalities software for import and export companies, is adding a veritable “explorer” of customs practices to its team.

Alban GRUSON, founder and CEO of CONEX, has entrusted him with a “made-to-measure” assignment: travel to a number of specially selected countries around the world to analyse customs flow, understand administrative and entrepreneurial logic behind the procedures, and finally map out a logical framework from which CONEX’s computer engineers can develop appropriate software.
« I had been waiting to meet the ideal globe-trotter before materializing the project I had been planning for some time, » explains Alban Gruson, « put Conex at the heart of International markets in order to respond to the vital need countries face in the evermore globalized marketplace. »

When asked about the official job title on his contract, Lance THOMPSON, the “globe-trotter” in question, confirms, with a big smile, to having been recruited as a “customs anthropologist”.

Lance THOMPSON certainly wasn’t expecting such an offer when he met Alban GRUSON at the 8 th European Customs Symposium, in November 2005. At the time he was an intern with Odasce (external trade automation and simplification development office), the French association organising the symposium. At 36 years of age, this Franco-American presented an atypical profile of a researcher decorated with a range of diplomas (doctorate of social anthropology, graduate of the ESM-A professional university in Marne-la-Vallée, author of a dissertation on Trade with China ) and familiar with customs matters thanks to his training with Odasce.

« I am completely enthusiastic; Alban GRUSON’s challenge is stimulating. It implies a long-term commitment in order to realize Mr GRUSON’s unique world vision. »

For two weeks, the customs anthropologist is going to submerge himself in the workings of the CONEX software. Then he will continue his training in Neuilly with ED-EDITIONS, subsidiary of CONEX, before setting his itinerary, which will take him to the heart of international trade.
